Leadville, the highest incorporated city in North America and the quintessential mining town of the West, is currently attracting tourists by publicizing its colorful history and gorgeous mountain location. However, the way tourism is approached causes it to stand out among neighboring chic ski resorts of Aspen, Vail and neighboring Summit County. Leadville is an oasis in the sky. The people are proud and protective of their mining heritage. History is alive here, and visitors can bask in the beauty of the Colorado Rockies and purchase homes and land at great prices.

In 1879, Leadville, Colorado became the place to turn to in the American West. Thousands of people did come, riding stagecoaches, horses and wagons and even walking over the steep and dangerous trails interspersed among the towering mountain peaks. The survivors discovered a thriving city that exceeded the imagination. High up at 10,200 feet above sea level, Leadville was both the greatest and worst of Colorado's mining frontier. Ten million dollars in silver was produced annually by 400 mines, and the down and out drifters mingled freely with the millionaire silver barons. Just a few blocks from the gambling halls and depressing slums, stood impressive opera houses.

"There has been but one Leadville and there will never be another." In the 1970's, the tradition continued and many young men flocked to Leadville on the basis of rumors of high-paying mining jobs. Many took up residence at The Tabor Grand on Harrison Avenue, a hotel that had been constructed by the wealthiest silver baron Leadville had ever known. Leadville was welcoming and quaint with "gingerbread" Victorian houses that the miners and their families called home. On the weekends the miners hung out in bars and as today, Leadville's architecture, traditions, and culture became captivating.
