The Town was established in 1859 for the miners who were working rich placer gold deposits during the gold and silver rush, and the first post office was located there between the Continental Divide and Salt Lake City. Hard rock mining took the place of placer mining, following the gold to the source veins in the hills. Hydraulic mining was necessary in some upper gravel benches north of the Blue River, as evidenced by characteristic gravel ridges and the remains of a dredge in a pond off the Swan River and on the Blue and Snake Rivers, which can still be seen today.
Walking tours and mine tours are offered in the Town, and there are many preserved buildings and museums to visit. These add value to the real estate, in addition to setting it apart from the other mountain resorts and towns. This is a Home Rule Municipality and the county seat of Summit County. Approximately 2,500 residents live here full time. $45,000 is the town's average household income.
The climate is referred to as high alpine, and the tree line comes to an end at 11,500 feet. People travel here from lower altitudes during the summers to enjoy the 70 degree temperatures.
