Not only are these urban farmers and gardeners saving money but they are also helping the environment and saving resources.

Denver is not alone. Across Metro Denver, Aurora, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Thornton and Westminster, Colorado and the nation are joining the movement to promote agriculture in our yards and even in vacant lots. The movement embraces using our natural resources wisely and promotes renewability to the greatest extent possible.
In Denver there is even promotion for the use of food producing animals. Denver's current ordinances allow ownership of many animals commonly found on farms. However, to be permitted one must allow visits and inspections by Denver City agencies as well as posting notices in your yard and getting approval from your neighbors. The fees for the permit are $150 initially and $70 a year for renewal. A renewal application can be denied if any new neighbor who has moved in objects. Consequently, the procedures can present huge barriers to anyone wanting chickens for eggs and goats for milk.
Denver is not alone in allowing food producing animals. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle all allow them. Other cities in Colorado that allow food producing animals close to the Metro Area are Arvada, Colorado Springs, Ft. Collins and Lakewood.
So go ahead, try whatever you're comfortable with. I'll bet that there's an area where you can start a small garden. You can do it. There's nothing better than collecting and eating what you have grown. It just tastes better and is nutritionally superior from ordinary store bought vegetables. Additionally, you'll enjoy a great sense of accomplishment!
