Upper Arkansas Valley, Leadville, Buena Vista, & Salida Real Estate
With lovely trees, beautiful wildflowers, high peaks, and deep canyons, the area is certainly full of extremes; South Central Colorado offers a bit of everything. This area is unpredictable as well as beautiful, with its brown plains, silver lakes and snow-capped mountains. Bodies of water like the Arkansas River in the Royal Gorge will provide kayakers and fishermen with hours of fun.
When it became a rail hub in the 1880s, it grew quickly. It still roars with rapids. The headquarters of the Arkansas River Valley State Park are located in Salida. Some of the best whitewater rafting is available on the Arkansas River; with its rapids that range from easy to challenging, it is the most popular for boating in the nation.
The Rainbow and Colorado trails can be accessed from Salida for the enjoyment of hikers and mountain bikers. During the winter, give skiing a try at the Monarch Ski Resort, where 300 inches of fluffy powder fall each winter. This resort receives lots of accolades but is not as popular as some of the other resorts.
In the west, the Collegiate Range has the most concentrated number of peaks in Colorado higher than 14,000 feet, and teems with hiking trails, mountain bike trails and ghost towns.
The Sawatch Mountain Range in the Northwest, Sangre de Cristo Mt. Range to the South, and the Mosquito Mountain Range to the North are responsible for Salida's mild climate, which is known as the Banana Belt, providing perfect conditions for outdoor recreation throughout all the seasons of the year.
The small town of Buena Vista, whose name means "good view," is snuggled at the base of the Collegiate and Sawatch Mountain Ranges. Buena Vista and the surrounding area of the Upper Arkansas River Valley were areas in which the Ute Indians lived at one time.
Ranchers came following the miners who moved to the area when they heard about gold being found, not unlike other Colorado towns. There is rowdiness in its past. For some really great rafting in Colorado, a good jumping off spot is Buena Vista. Sometimes called the whitewater capital, just 8 miles south, is Brown's Canyon.
The natural hot springs are another attraction of the Buena Vista area, allowing you to soak while viewing majestic, snow capped mountains.
